رنگ (Rang) – prints

The رنگ (Rang) series of relief prints has been produced using a studio-based process, inked on a variety of high quality papers. Each print is unique, one of a kind, and is part of a limited set of 50. The featured design has been carved and printed by hand in my studio, a development in my practice resulting from the Covid-19 isolation and lockdown period. I became aware of our dependency on external resources and wanted to consider how I could continue exploring mark-making, and pattern application on a variety of media and surfaces. The pattern is a composition of units born from a square grid with divided octagonal elements. The simple yet intriguing structure led me to consider how our visual engagement can be altered through experimenting with positive and negative spaces. Colour also plays a very large role in this exploration and therefore the series has become a means to study colour interactions and play with the concept of illusions. This particular pattern is a point of departure from an initial reference with the site of the Lahore Fort in Pakistan, which is where it rings most resonance for myself.  However, the pattern can also be found at the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, and therefore presents a connection that goes beyond a singular time and place.
