Santiponce is a town within the province of Seville in Spain, visited by Sara Choudhrey as part of her WCMT funded research visit to investigate the impact of Islamic heritage in the region. Santiponce is home to the ex- Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo where the walls are adorned with frescoes of geometric and arabesque designs, clearly influenced by the past presence of an Islamic visual culture.

This installation depicts 16-fold geometry, presenting the viewer with an insight into the complexity of pattern composition. The dual layers present the underlying structure and the outcome of an interlaced, weaving pattern. This installation therefore becomes a visual aid, bridging the gap between the artist, the process of art-making and the viewer.

The reflective surface places the viewer within the frame, presenting their ‘self’ amongst a complex grid of radii, both uniform and myriad. A playful opportunity for engagement allows the viewer to alter their alignment, their perceptions of space changing through their own movement.
